To ensure that you schedule your student to take the SAT test you should verify with a high school counselor that there have been no changes in the test dates. This rarely happens but it is better to be safe than to have your child miss the test.

While there are fees associated with taking the SAT and SAT Subject Test (currently $41.50) there are provisions for fee waivers for those who cannot afford to pay the test fees.

Along with waivers for test fees students may also qualify for application fee waivers at many colleges Not all colleges offer this benefit so check with your high school counselor to see if the college your child is interested in has this policy. You can request a fee waiver through you high school counselor.

There are two types of SAT tests.

1. SAT Reasoning Test: Normally, high school students in their junior or senior year take this test. Each section (critical reading, math, and writing) of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, with two writing sub-scores for multiple choice and essay.

The order of the test is as follows:

A 25-minute time for essay will always be the first section.
A 10-minute multiple-choice writing section will be in the final section.

The remaining six 25 minute sections can be in any order so that students sitting next to each other may have test booklets that are entirely different.

2. SAT Subject Test: This test is designed to evaluate the student's skill and knowledge in certain areas. Colleges feel that this test, taken in conjunction with your student's high school record, SAT Reasoning test, teachers recommendations and academic record provide a good indication of your students ability to succeed in college.

Like the ACT test it is extremely important that your student do well on the SAT. To insure the best possible results on the test it is recommended that your student take some preparatory classes, sample tests, etc. and prepare for the SAT.
