This one major idea could save you many dollars in paying for college
As you and your child consider what major subject they are going to pursue you may want to talk about the idea of what the college of choice may offer in terms of Department Scholarships.
The chances of finding a department scholarship can be greatly increased in you child declares the major course of study that is going to be pursued BEFORE you apply for financial aid.
Many colleges offer scholarships for specific areas of study, i.e. foreign language, specific areas of engineering, accounting, drama, etc.
When you are considering colleges to look at make sure that not only do they offer the major that your child wants to pursue, but that they also have the ability to offer a department scholarship for that specific major.
In some instances you child may have to change majors in order to qualify for a specific department scholarship.
A friend of mine was majoring in one subject when he learned that the language department offered a full – YES, FULL – scholarship in German language. In checking into this scholarship he found that there were only three people applying for the scholarship. He had a one-out-of three chance. He applied and won the scholarship. Because of this he changed his major and had the last two years of college paid for in full. He saved a lot of money. He then graduated and applied to a medial school. He is now a doctor and doing well.
Most parents and students do not know that department scholarships exist, but knowing this one approach to paying for college can take a great financial strain off both parents and their student.
