ACT Exam

The ACT exam is America's most widely accepted college entrance exam. It assesses a high school student's general education development and their ability to complete college level work.

The multiple-choice test covers four skill areas: English, Math, Reading and Science. A Writing test is optional.

Your high school counselor is your key contact in determining what college will accept either the ACT or the SAT.

You'll want to know which test will be used because there is a cost to take either test. The 2006-2007 basic registration fee for the ACT exam is $29.00, which includes sending score reports to up to four colleges. The basic fee for the ACT Plus Writing exam is $43.00.

It takes over 4 hours to take the ACT exam without the Writing Test. This time includes administration, instruction and breaks.

The following shows the actual breakdown of the test and times allotted.

English: 45 Minutes
Math: 60 Minutes
Reading: 35 Minutes
Science: 35 Minutes

ACT tests are administered in 50 states on five national test dates set in October, December, February, April, and June.

Make sure that you and your student make an appointment with your high school counselor to determine when will be the best time to take the test. The timing of taking the test may be critical, especially for submitting an early acceptance to a specific college. Timing can also be important when considering your preparation for the test.

How your student scores on the ACT is very important because of the weight placed on the score by colleges. Your student is competing with thousands of students for acceptance into college, so the better your child scores, the more likelihood of acceptance into your college of choice.
